September 14th, 2015, New York. Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, a lifelong women’s rights advocate, joins Gloria Steinem as Co-Convener of the Steering Committee of Donor Direct Action (DDA). Donor Direct Action was created by Jessica Neuwirth, founder of Equality Now, to strengthen women’s rights groups on the frontlines around the world. Using social media and internet crowd funding techniques, Donor Direct Action supports partners in Afghanistan, the Congo, Kenya, Latvia, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, South Africa, and Syria. Last month DDA crossed the $1 million threshold, having raised more than $1 million from donors in 40 countries for the work of its partners.

Explaining her decision to join the leadership of Donor Direct Action, Navi Pillay said, “I have witnessed firsthand the needs of women’s rights organizations working on the front lines, where so much is done with such limited resources. Donor Direct Action enables anyone anywhere to help these organizations and make a real difference in the lives of women and girls around the world.”

Through its website, Donor Direct Action makes it possible for individuals around the world to learn firsthand through videos and testimonials about the frontline work of women leaders and to support this work with online contributions. 90% of each donation made, and in some cases 100%, is re-granted and goes directly and immediately where it is most needed for maximum impact with minimum bureaucracy.

Donor Direct Action is a project of the Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI), which this year marks its thirtieth anniversary. SIGI was co-founded by Simone de Beauvoir and Robin Morgan to promote global solidarity for women. Robin Morgan currently serves as President of SIGI.
